BAITCASTER AND SPIN FISHING

SKILLS & STRATEGIES

Make no mistake, THIS IS A PRESENTATION BASED FISHERY

We cannot stress enough how important proper casting is to be successful in our fishery.

Time invested in practicing at home pays back huge dividends in the jungle.

DONNA'S DOUBLE.  There's a story behind the video above.  We were working a back corner of a lagoon, focused on a particularly good looking spot.  Although we made about 8 casts back in there, none of us really hit the target that we wanted.  We were about to move on, but our Guide Caio wouldn't have it.  He would NOT leave until one of us made the cast.  Donna nailed it, and the MOMENT the lure landed it was instantly crushed by a pair of paca peacock bass. The successful cast was 2 FEET CLOSER TO THE TARGET than the previous casts.  This lesson is reinforced every single day.

CASTING SKILLS - BAITCASTER

FISHING with a BAITCASTER

The vast majority of our Guests use an OVERHEAD cast (above), which can be an extremely limiting and ineffective cast for jungle fishing. If this is the only cast in your arsenal, then our Guides are very limited with the kinds of structure they can take you to.  Please don’t handicap yourself!

Why is it so bad? The trajectory of an Overhead cast is so high that the lure will end up in one of two places, both of which result in a failed presentation:

1) Stuck in the trees. Retrieving the lure spooks all of the fish in this area.

2) Far from the base of the structure. Far from our largest fish.

If your cast tends to have a really high arch, we'd like to suggest looking at the ROLL Cast (above).

Why is this cast so effective? The low/level trajectory of a Roll Cast fires your lure UNDER the branches and THROUGH the structure, EXACTLY where our largest fish are holding.

How difficult is it to learn? It’s easy!  As long as you practice a bit BEFORE you come to the jungle. Arrive with a basic understanding of this cast, and you’ll hit the ground running and will have a blast in our fishery.  If you choose to wait until you get here, then you’ll start to pick it up about halfway through your trip.  Your call.

Step 1: RIGHT NOW, WATCH THE VIDEO (below)- Cast Better in 10 Minutes With These Easy Tips: Baitcasting Instruction.  Investing in10 minutes of instructions will really help you.  But the critical element is in step 2. Here's the link if the video does not load below (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o5x1slGi0so&t=22s).

Step 2: SET UP A TARGET AND PRACTICE. Reinforcing the mechanics of a proper cast will create muscle-memory.  Muscle memory only happens through actual practice, and it allows you to eventually make perfect casts without having to think through the process.  It becomes second-nature.  This opens up your field if view, allowing you to see what’s actually going on in the water around you.  This is next-level angling. This will significantly increase your success rate!

CASTING SKILLS  - SPINNING

FISHING WITH A SPINNING ROD

THE GOOD NEWS: Fishing a bucktail jig with a spinning rod is the absolute easiest way to catch the most peacock bass in the Amazon.  If your life depended on catching peacock bass in the Amazon, this is how you would survive.

THE BAD NEWS: Spin Casting - You’re probably doing it wrong.

We all know how to cast a spinning rod, right?  We hate to break it to you, but...probably not.

IT'S NOT YOUR FAULT!  Like us, you probably taught yourself or were taught by someone who really didn’t know. Just a couple of easy adjustments will take you from good to great. Invest in learning this and you will be a significantly better angler.

Step 1: WATCH Casting Accuracy with Adam Royter (below). It’s a 7 minute investment of your time, easy.

4 Items to look for:

1. NEVER EVER click the bail closed to stop the cast

2. NEVER EVER click the bail closed by turning the handle

3. Review items #1 and #2

4. Feathering the line to gradually stop the lure allows for an incredibly accurate and deadly presentation.  Do this by gently holding the line with your non-casting hand, or by using your trigger finger against the spool with your casting hand.

Step 2: SET UP A TARGET AND PRACTICE. Reinforcing the mechanics of a proper cast will create muscle memory.  Muscle memory only happens through actual practice, and it allows you to eventually make perfect casts without having to think through the process.  It becomes second-nature.  This opens up your field if view, allowing you to see what’s actually going on in the water around you.  This is next-level angling, and this will significantly increase your success rate!
